My Name is Albert Ayler
Musik-Dokumentation / Kasper Collin / S 2005 / 79 Min. (OmenglU)
Hamburg Premiere / (Free-) Jazz
A big mystery in Jazz: Saxophonist Albert Ayler, Thelonius Monk’s protége, says good-bye to his wife and three days later his dead body floats in the river Hudson. The film follows the career of the visionary free-jazz instrumentalist from Cleveland to Sweden, where he recorded his first disc, to New York. Family members, friends, colleagues, spectacular archive material as well as his partly unpublished music and Ayler himself show a diverse portrait of a complex personality.
