In the late 1960s, the Soviet Politburo ordered the creation of musical groups similar to those of the West in an effort to steer youth away from Western music. Known as vocal-instrumental ensembles (VIA), these groups ushered in what some call the “golden era” of Ukrainian popular music. However, instead of loyal musicians:inside, the government got a modern and original music scene. How and why could all this come about in a socialist Soviet republic?
